Tips to Come Prepared

If you read last week’s blog about reading the signs it is time to break up with your company, you might be considering your options elsewhere. Let’s talk about how you can be prepared for the next truck driving jobs fair you attend.

We have all heard stories about the guy who walks in the door out of curiosity and stumbles on the best job of his life. The truth is that almost everybody is not that guy, and we need to put our best game face on when searching for a new truck driving job. Here are a few steps to keep in mind:

Register for the event.

An official registration guarantees a smoother entrance at the door and usually comes with a name badge that is going to help recruiters connect with you. It also shows the recruiters you are serious and are interested in the company.

Sleep well and eat a good breakfast.

Don’t let tiredness or hunger keep you from being your best.

Dress like a professional.

These days, a full suit can look over the top at a job fair, not to mention how hard it is to keep them from becoming a wrinkled mess if you’re in the truck. Opt for a nice a clean shirt and a clean pair of pants. Ladies, a conservative outfit is good. You’re going to be on your feet so wear some nice comfortable shoes. And remember to smile!

Sell your experience.

If you have a resume, bring it on hand. If you don’t, that’s okay, just make sure to be prepared to share your previous work experience. It may help to bring other documents that show your qualifications, such as a long form, license endorsements or awards. This helps highlight your qualifications to recruiters and sets you apart from other candidates.

Ask questions.

This may be the only time you have eye contact with a recruiter before starting with a new company, so ask questions while you can read their body language. Beforehand, you should ask yourself what you really want out of a new job. Is it more home time? Newer equipment? An option to move around in the company? Whatever is pushing you away from your current job needs to be your motivation into the next job. Remember, recruiters are reviewing you and you’re reviewing them to determine fit. Leave with information.
