Dealing with Homesickness as an OTR Driver
Truck Driver

One of the hardest challenges about over-the-road (OTR) trucking is leaving home. When you’re out for weeks at a time, the loneliness can really affect you in a negative way. Every OTR driver gets homesick on the road at one point or another. Sometimes it only lasts a few minutes, but other times it can start to disrupt your life. Here are some ways every truck driver can manage homesickness.

Set a communication routine

We’re sure you’re already keeping in touch with your friends and family on the road. However, a lot of drivers find it helpful to set a routine. For example, a driver with kids may pull over to video chat them every evening before they go to bed, or in the morning before they leave for school.

Scheduling these little chats into your day gives you something to look forward to. It also prevents some of the phone tag that can happen when you try to call friends and families on a whim.

Stay Active

A good workout is great for taking your mind off things. Exercise creates endorphins, those chemicals in your brain that help put you in a good mood. If you’re struggling with homesickness, try pumping some weights or taking a long walk around the truck stop. You’ll feel healthier and happier.

Find a Hobby

Homesickness can be 10 times worse when you’re bored. During your downtime, make sure you have ways to pass the time and have some fun. Binge-watching TV shows on your phone or laptop can get boring after a while, so it helps to have a few options. Some good hobbies for truck drivers include:

  • Reading
  • Crafting
  • Exploring

Keep Company

Life on the road doesn’t always have to be lonely. Depending on your trucking company, you may be able to take your friends and family along for the ride. Dynamic Transit is proud to offer a rider program that allows drivers to have a significant other or pet in the cab with them. Having someone along for the ride is a great way to avoid homesickness while traveling.

Some occasional homesickness is an unavoidable part of being a truck driver, but it doesn’t have to control your life. Follow these tips to connect with your loved ones and keep your spirits high on the road. For more of the best trucker tips, explore the Dynamic Transit blog.
