7 Pro Tips To Truck Driving

We have a great pool of experts to draw from in our Dynamic for pro tips to truck driving. When it comes to learning the best ways to handle the job of a truck driver we have you covered. From our guys in the shop, the folks in the office and the drivers on the road, we’ve gleaned the best advice to be had across the board. So, if you’re looking to up your trucking game, pay attention.

1. Be a good communicator.

You and your significant other have probably heard this advice before, but this is good advice that carries into every area of life. In order to communicate, you need to listen first; otherwise, you don’t know what you’re supposed to be communicating. When it comes to truck driving jobs, your driver manager is your closest relationship. Listen to each other and talk often.

2. Treat the equipment like you own it.

You’re only earning as long as the wheels are turning, so keep them in good shape. Keep regularly scheduled maintenance with the shop, and if something seems off, give them a call. Keep the truck washed and looking good. Yeah, the truck is your home, but it’s an extension of you.

3. Remember your manners.

Whether it’s in a truck stop or at a loading dock, greet everybody with the courtesy and friendship you’re looking for too. Clean up after yourself. Say “please” and “thank you”. And wish somebody a good day. Great truck drivers always mind their manners.

4. Go with the flow.

Keeping a schedule can be frustrating. Interruptions on the road happen…All. The. Time. The best tip is to go with the flow. Being bent out of shape isn’t going to clear the construction in front of you. Do the best you can, and if you’re late, communicate (see #1).

5. Enjoy the drive.

Sure, driving a truck is a job, but a job is what you make it. Reconnect with what drew you to trucking in the first place. For most of us, it’s the lure of the open road behind a big engine. Yeah, there are schedules to keep, but have fun along the way. It’s the right time of year to roll down the windows and crank the radio up. Go visit some of those tourist attractions near your stops. If your kind of adventure is ordering the meatloaf instead of the chicken, do it.

6. Take care of yourself out there.

You, the driver, are our company’s greatest asset. Emotionally, spiritually, physically – we need you to look after yourself. Get plenty of sleep, grab a healthy meal (probably not the meatloaf), start a new exercise routine, listen to a book, call a friend, keep a regular maintenance schedule on yourself.

7. Remember, you have a family behind you.

We mean that. Across the board, we are pleased knowing Dynamic Transit employees consider this a family. We treat each other with respect and love. We give each other the benefit of the doubt, and we are protective of our own. When the days on the road are long, we’re here right with you providing pro tips to truck driving while on the road.
